The Host

The Host is a 2006 South Korean monster film, which also contains parts of comedy and drama films. The film was directed by Bong Joon-ho, who also co-wrote the screenplay, with Baek Chul-hyun. Starring in the movie as members of a mediocre family thrust into the middle of unusual events were Song Kang-ho, Byeon Hee-bong, Park Hae-il, Bae Doona and Ko Ah-seong. Following the success of the director’s prior work, Memories of Murder, The Host was heavily forecasted and hyped.

It was released on a record number of screens in its home country on July twenty-seven, 2006 and broke boxoffice records thru its domestic run. By the end of its run on Nov 8th, the film had been seen over 13,000,000 times, making it the highest grossing South Korean film ever, thrashing the prior leader The King and the Clown, which had attracted 12.3 million folks. The film was released on a limited basis in the US on March nine, 2007, and on DVD, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats on July twenty-four, 2007.

The film opens with an Yankee army pathologist commanding a disinclined Korean helper to violate custom by dumping over a hundred bottles of formaldehyde down the drain, that leads to the Han River. Some years on, 2 men are standing and fishing in Han Brook when one reveals a mutant amphibian which is rarely shown.

He releases the palm-sized creature when it bites him. 4 more years after, a person commits suicide by jumping off a bridge into Han Stream , but not before seeing that there’s “something dark, underwater.”. In the modern day, Park Gang-du ( Song Kang-ho ) is a reputedly slow-witted man ( his father claims he’d been that way since a smash on the head many years earlier ) who runs a snack-bar with his pop, Hee-bong ( Byeon Hee-bong ). Hyun-seo ( Ko Ah-seong ) is a schoolgirl and Gang-du’s child. Gang-du’s sister, Nam-joo ( Bae Doona ), is a state medalist archer who has an unlucky bent to hesitate, and his bro Nam-il ( Park Hae-il ) is an alcoholic previous activist who hasn’t done much since graduating from school.

Gang-du is delivering a meal to some patrons, and sees a group gathering along Han Brook . He joins them as they stand close to the side of the stream and point at something under the Wonhyo Bridge. It drops into the water, and moves towards shore. Gang-du throws a can of lager into the water near it, and the creature grabs for the can. The other folks nearby then start to playfully toss other pieces of food to it, but the creature vanishes from view. Some moments later, the creature seems on shore behind them, and starts to attack and devour folks.

Gang-du and an Yank man try and fight the creature, and successfully hit it with a street sign.

The creature then bites off the Yankee’s arm. As Gang-du runs away, he sees Hyun-seo appear from the break bar and grabs her hand without stopping. He then stumbles and accidentally grabs a different girl. A short distance away, he looks back and sees the creature pull Hyun-seo into the brook. Gang-du then sees the monster pulling her on the opposite bank before vanishing into the water. As the family mourns the young girl in a shelter set up for victims of the assault, govt members in bio-hazard suits arrive and demand to understand who’s had direct contact with the creature. Gang-du admits that he has, and the family is made to the infirmary, where Gang-du is quarantined. The Korean executive claims the creature isn’t only a direct danger, but also the host of a threatening, unknown pathogen that they claim snuffed out the Yank whose arm had been bitten off. Gang-du receives a phone call from Hyun-seo, who isn’t dead, but besieged in a sewer. She’s cut off as her phone battery runs out.

Gang-du makes an attempt to explain to others, but his reason sounds more insane than sane to the folk at the infirmary. Hee-bong believes his child, and uses up his nest egg in order that they can escape from the hospital and rescue Hyun-seo. They are then able to get a van, 2 non-yellow hazmat suits, weapons, and a map of the sewer system round the Han Brook . They return to their break stand at the banks of the Han stream to rest for the night. They wake to find the creature watching them. Hee-bong fires on the creature, leading it to attack them and overturn the break stand. As the creature attempts to get at them within, Hee-bong fires a shot that causes the creature to escape. Hee-bong is finally finished by the creature, and Gang-du is caught by squaddies ; Nam-il and Nam-joo escape but are separated.

In the surgery, Gang-du overhears that there is no pathogen : the govt is simply perpetuating a sham to save face. The Yankee scientist who lets out the secret says that Gang-du is infected in the brain. A gang of doctors perform a frontal lobotomy on Gang-du. Later, a nurse ridicules the reputedly brain-damaged and non responsive Gang-du.

He all of a sudden takes her hostage with a syringe full of his “infected” blood, his “slow-wittedness” reputedly cured by the lobotomy, and escapes to find that he isn’t in a hospice, but the back of an army van on the Han Stream shores. He drives to Wonhyo Bridge in an ambulance. Hyun-seo has been surrounded in a deep sewer pit since she was spit out by the creature. The creature periodically drops off victims into the pit, to store for later. Hyun-seo finds all of the others dead or dying excepting a young street urchin named Se-ju.

Nam-il goes to a university mate for help, and traces Hyun-seo’s telephone call. Before losing consciousness under a bridge, he sends a SMS message with Hyun-seo’s location to Nam-joo. Nam-Joo goes to the bridge, but comes across the creature. She is near enough that she has got a shot, but just as she has got the creature in her sights, she hesitates.

The creature runs past her and she is knocked comatose. Hyun-seo attempts to climb out of the sewer by a rope fashioned from her and other victims’ garments, but the creature snatches her and places her back on her feet. The camera cuts to black as the creature pounces on her and Se-ju.

Gang-du finds the feeding pit only in time to see the creature dashing away with a kid’s arm dangling from its mouth.

He chases it on land as it dives into the stream. Nam-il wakes to see a homeless man who has been inclining to him, and with the person’s help and spirits, he makes many Molotov cocktails and together they take a taxi to the Wonhyo Bridge. She sees the creature and Gang-du run past her and follows them. The three brothers are led straight to the riverbank, where the creature attacks protesters demonstrating the govt’s use of Agent Yellow – a chemical weapon highly dangerous to humans – against the creature ( and non-existent pathogen ). Police press back the protesters, making an attempt to hold them back.

The bunch ultimately disperses as the creature comes close to the coast. All 3 brothers meet up momentarily on top of the bridge, but Gang-Du jumps from the bridge to follow the creature. Agent Yellow is released and incapacitates the creature briefly. Pushing thru the lethal smoke, Gang-du pulls out the 2 outwardly dead kids from the creature’s mouth.

Hyun-Seo had seized the other kid and had evaded being entirely swallowed by grabbing onto a big tooth but the 3 brothers discover she has snuffed i. The creature revives and tries to revisit the stream. Infuriated , Gang-du grabs a street sign and starts to battle the creature. Nam-il also starts to throw Molotov cocktails at it he had prepared formerly. The creature, seemingly frightened of fire, continues to escape. The homeless man whom Nam-il met seems and douses the creature in petrol, but Nam-il incidentally drops his last bottle as he tries to throw. Nam-joo picks up one of the lit slivers with her arrow and shoots it into the creature’s eye, making it burst into flames, howling in pain. The creature makes a last attempt to leave towards the protection of the river, but Gang-du eventually impales it with a street sign. As Nam-joo and Nam-il cradle their dead niece, Gang-du manages to revive Se-ju. In the epilogue, we see Gang-du and Se-ju living as a family in the reconstructed and cozy-looking snack bar, sometime in the wintertime. He is getting his rifle but then sets it down, believing it was his imagination. The kid asks him to switch it off, as he finds it dull, and they eat dinner.
