The Green Grid Debuts New Tools for Data Centre Efficiency

by admin on February 4, 2010

The Green Grid has today announced new tools and new industry alliances in its Third Annual Green Grid Technical Forum and Members of the meeting. Those attending the forum to learn first hand how these new tools and partnerships are designed to meet the global needs of data center operators and encourage greater collaboration among key stakeholders in industry and government. With the theme “Get Connected-drive global change, with strategies for IT”, the Forum also features a speech by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

“At this year’s Technical Forum, members of The Green Grid is demonstrating its commitment to improve energy efficiency data center through hands on development of tools, standards and global alliances that make it easier for users end to promote best practices, “said Christian Belady, Microsoft’s representative and treasurer of The Green Grid. “Building on Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. ‘s inspiring efforts, we welcome new voices to join the hundreds of volunteers in our unique organization that are working to develop new programs to help managers of data centers and end-user energy efficiency before. ”

The Green Grid, which creates a unique opportunity for collaboration of industry worldwide, is active in dozens of both strategic and tactical projects to improve data center energy efficiency. As a result of these efforts, the organization today announced new, free, online tools that extend the benefits of free tools widely used cooling introduced in 2009:

• Energy Efficiency Estimator

The new Power Efficiency Estimator is designed to help data center operators to compare the various options for energy topologies and technologies within their facilities. Taking factors such as workload, availability and space constraints into account and generates a report that is designed to improve decision making within a facility. Estimator energy efficiency will be available late in the first quarter of 2010.

• Calculator PUE

Calculator new PUE allows data center operators to easily enter data specific to their facilities at regular intervals to determine their PUE. Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), an indicator created by The Green Grid, determines the amount of energy used by the facility and the IT team within it. PUE Calculator will be available late in the first quarter of 2010.

• New White Paper: The impact of virtualization of data center physical infrastructure

This new document provides guidance on how professionals can maximize data center power and electricity saving refrigeration equipment in a data center environment that uses virtualization to achieve consolidation strategies. The document is available to members and nonmembers in the “Library & Tools” page of The Green Grid on the Web.

New Online Course • Academy Green Grid

Green Grid The Academy has launched its latest self-directed online course, data center 101: limited capacity to help managers and data center operators familiar with the language of industry and solutions to everyday problems central database.

In addition to these tools, The Green Grid also announced significant progress in its previously announced Data Center Design Guide. With an outline and draft chapters and is available for member comment, The Green Grid encourages all members to participate in this unprecedented opportunity to define a new data center architecture, particularly in defining the capabilities that allow native optimization and policy management for maximum efficiency.

New publication from ASHRAE and The Green Grid
The Green Grid and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) have co-authored a book entitled “Real Time Measurements of energy consumption in data centers,” which focuses on the measurement of consumption energy to determine energy efficiency, along with the exposure of major IT / Facilities interfaces in the data center. The book is free to member companies of The Green Grid and is available for purchase or download via the ASHRAE bookstore at $ 54.00.

Alliance Data Center Pulse
Besides the introduction of new tools for industry, The Green Grid has signed an alliance agreement with the Data Center Pulse, a global community of end users of data center owners and operators focused on influencing the industry through the eyes of the customer. The agreement is designed to ensure consistency in the treatment of the energy needs of the IT community.

“Annual of The Green Grid Technical Forum has become an information exchange only for data center managers and technology providers,” said Dean Nelson, President and Founder, Data Center Pulse. “The data center operators that represent the data pulse Community Center are encouraged by the progress of The Green Grid has done and look forward to working together to expand the scope of indicators such as EuP and DCiE.
