Major chip maker Intel (www.intel.com) is undergoing a four-year cycle to update servers to consolidate their data center, which is to save the company about $ 250 million in operating costs over eight years, Intel’s chief technology officer, said Diane Bryant on Tuesday.

So far the company has Widdle its 147 data centers up to about 70, “Bryant said. From 2007 to 2015, the company expects to save $ 250 million in costs associated with data centers, including cooling, system maintenance and support.

Launched in 2007, the four-year cycle for updating the servers deployed faster chips, consolidate servers and stores applications in virtualized environments.

The strategy has paid off, helping the company save 45 million U.S. dollars in 2008 alone.

The company has replaced 10 single-core Xeon chips with Nehalem-based quad single quad-core Xeon chip, which has helped reduce the hardware in their facilities while also boosting the overall performance of the server.

Intel has also managed to reduce the costs of purchasing hardware and associated indirect costs, such as energy and maintenance, per server. For example, the company has installed more energy-efficient servers to reduce energy costs.

Other forms of the company is working to improve energy efficiency in data centers are participating in the bodies of U.S. government as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the use of technologies to optimize server performance by maintaining high utilization rates, and move applications from dedicated hardware to virtualized environments.

The company is also testing different tactics to reduce your energy costs, and experimenting with a data center using air conditioning less, and work with universities and companies like HP and IBM to find the best methods of cooling centers data.
